There is so many things that come with relaxed hair. Especially comments from peers. That’s the big one that comes with it. I’ve always had peers ask, “Do you relax your hair?!” “Wow is it even all YOUR hair, like it grows from your scalp?!” “Oh my gosh can I see your roots?!” And while you so kindly respond yes to all these questions that you truly don’t feel like answering, you wonder why you even continue to relax your hair in the first place. “You’re going to go bold!” “That is so unhealthy for your hair!” “But curls look so pretty!” I DO NOT CARE. I DO NOT CARE. I DO NOT CARE!
HOW LONG HAVE I USED RELAXERS
I’ve been relaxing my hair for 13-14 YEARS.
WHY DO YOU RELAX YOUR HAIR?
I relax my hair because when I was a young girl, my grandmother (who is a certified hair stylist) decide to try it on me to see if it would make it easier for my mom to manage my hair. I had a big, crazy, wild curly fro when I got out of the shower. My kitchen, (some of y’all know what that means!) me edges, EVERYTHING were just these tiny tight little curls that were difficult to handle and untangle and manage. So after that initial time of getting my hair relaxed, I simply continued to do it. Now that I am older, I do it because I love having my hair straight. I love my looser curls as well for the days I don’t have time to straighten it. I love how soft and healthy my hair feels. And most importantly, I love that it’s manageable and I can do whatever, however I want to it.
BUT ISN’T THAT UNHEALTHY?
When used the incorrect way, without following guidelines, hair can become brittle and unhealthy. If you go to the right certified hair stylist, or feel comfortable doing it yourself because you know how, then all the power to you. The best you can do is go to someone that knows what they are doing and is certified. My hair is strong, healthy, does not break apart, is not brittle, and is still thick and shiny despite the fact that I’ve relaxed it for so long. It’s all about how you take care of the hair that makes it healthy or not.
HOW DO YOU KEEP IT HEALTHY THEN?
There are so many things you can do to keep relaxed hair healthy. First of all, going to someone certified, like I said before, is important. Deep conditioners monthly or even weekly are extremely important. Not washing as often is also another important factor. I wash 1-2 times a week AT MOST. Dry shampoo and baby powder are your friend at the end of the week. I don’t apply heat everyday. I only apply heat the first day that I straighten my hair and that is it! Unless I am going to use a curling iron for curls when my hair is a little more “dirty”. Wrap your hair to go to sleep! No pony tails, no headbands (unless they are silk). Wrap your hair in what is called a “duby”. Basically you brush your hair around your head in a circle and put clips or Bobby pins to hold it in place. After you are done put it in a silk wrap so that your hair holds moisture while you sleep and doesn’t rub away those essential oils it needs onto your pillow. Get your ends trimmed every time you get your hair relaxed as well. That is one of the most important things.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU RELAX YOUR HAIR?
I relax my hair about every 9-15 weeks. I try to stretch as long as possible because the longer you wait the better. And yes, I have dyed my hair! I’ve never bleached it, but I have definitely colored it with permanent hair dye and it is still healthy!
WHAT TYLE OF RELAXER DO YOU USE?
I used Precise super relaxer. I have used it more than any other one, it is my favorite.
HOW LONG HAS YOUR HAIR GROWN WHILE HAVING IT RELAXED?
It’s grown to 3/4s of the way down my back. I cut it super short (LIKE BOB SHORT) and it’s already growing back extremely fast. So, yes relaxed hair can grow ladies! You just have to take care of it.
Relaxed hair is very do-able, and definitely nothing to stress over if you maintain it.
